Towanda downs Wellsboro, 17-6

The Towanda Black Knights ran out to a 17-0 halftime lead then held on to defeat Wellsboro 17-6 in Northern Tier League football action Friday night at Wellsboro.

A Chad Willey 10 yard run in the first quarter and the point after kick by Kirby Ellis gave the Black Knights a 7-0 lead.

The visitors increased their pad to 15-0 in the second period as Towanda quarterback Mark Munkittrick hit Matt Herring with a 28 yard scoring pass. Charley Tuttle passed to Eric Strickland for the successful two point conversion.

A Towanda safety closed out the first half scoring as the Black Knights tackled Hornet running back Erick Crawford in his own end zone.

Wellsboro scored on a Chad Watters three yard in the fourth quarter, following a scoreless third stanza. The two-point conversion run failed to make the final count 17-6.

Towanda stands 1-2 on the season Wellsboro falls to 0-3.

Ellis was the top rusher on the evening, carrying the ball 15 times for 86 yards for Towanda. The Hornets were held to only 15 rushing yards on 20 attempts.

Chris Morral caught four of quarterback Watters' eight completions for 88 yards to lead the Hornet receiving corps. Max Gross caught two balls for 28 yards.

For the Black Knights, Herring hauled in four passes for 59 yards including his 28 yard touchdown catch.

The Hornets travel to North Penn Saturday, September 21 for a 1:30 p.m. game versus the Panthers. North Penn lost Friday night September 13,19-0 at Loyalsock.
