Wellsboro gets first 'W' of season

After an 0-3 start to the 2006 season, the Wellsboro Green Hornets took to the newly finished Lockhart Street Bowl Friday night in Sayre, Pennsylvania. After Sayre scored on their first possession of the night, led by Running Back Andy Podolinski, the Green Hornets took over and put up their first points of the contest on the following drive.
In what seemed to be an offensive struggle through much of the first half, Sayre and Wellsboro were both fairly evenly matched. Sayre was looking to add more points on the board in the closing minutes of the first half, when Senior Linebacker Jake Monks applied heavy pressure to Sayre Quarterback Michael Cooley, causing him to fumble. Sophomore Defensive End Pat Driebelbies was in the right place at the right time, as he picked up the ball and took it into the end zone to put the Hornets up 20-19 going into halftime.
Wellsboro picked up right where they left off once the second half started. The Hornet offense was able to captialize on Sayre mistakes, as Senior Quarterback Tim Shaw, Junior Fullback Erik Coolidge, and Sophomore Running Back Jake Coolidge all added touchdowns. Wellsboro's final score was setup by Junior Wide Receiver Pat Eaton, when he came up with a fumble recovery by a Redskin kick returner. Wellsboro was able to pick up their first win of the season, improving their record to 1-3 on the year by defeating the Redskins, 40-26.
