The Wellsboro Green Hornets (3-5) put themselves in a position to avoid a losing season as they downed Cowanesque Valley 41-7 during Homecoming Friday.
Last week's game was the first homecoming win for the Hornets since 2002.
"Overall, it was a great team effort and everything came together for us," commented Wellsboro head coach Chris Morral.
The Hornet offense played a solid game against the young Indians team, racking up 423 yards of total offense. The Hornets also established themselves defensively, only allowing 80 yards by CV.
Senior running back Jesse Tom amassed 167 yards on 18 carries while senior quarterback Tim Shaw completed four of seven passes for 112 yards and three touchdowns.
"We had a lot of opportunities and we took advantage of them," Morral said.
The Hornets started the scoring early and never looked back. The first Wellsboro touchdown came on the Hornets' second play, as Shaw hooked up with Jake Monks for a 50 yard touchdown pass. The extra point attempt was no good, but Wellsboro took the 6-0 lead 3:07 into the game.
Shaw picked up almost half of his rushing yards late in the first quarter as he ran in a touchdown on a quarterback keeper from 19 yards away. He also ran in the two point conversion attempt to give his team the 14-0 lead and all they points they would need.
However, the Hornets were not ready to let up on the Indians.
Tom managed to score twice in the second quarter. Pat Driebelbies hit both extra points to give Wellsboro the 28-0 lead.
The Hornets kept the pressure on late in the first half as Shaw scored on a one-yard keeper with less than a minute to play before halftime. The missed extra point put the Hornets up 34-0 going into the locker room.
Wellsboro starters played through the third quarter and Shaw ran in the third touchdown, this one from four yards out, late in the quarter. The extra point gave Wellsboro the 41-0 lead.
CV did manage to avoid the shutout as Seth Baker, who had 53 yards on 21 carries, scored from a yard out with three minutes left in the game. Anthony Tamarro added 33 yards on seven carries.
Wellsboro improved to 3-5 on the season with two games left. Wins over Wyalusing, who is coming off two straight losses, and North Penn would give the Hornets a .500 record. Both of the games are at home.
In the JV game, Wellsboro prevailed Monday by a score of 13-12. They are now 6-2 on the season.
