Wellsboro suffers 19-6 loss to Trojans

By: Chris McGann  /  October 12, 2006

The Wellsboro Hornets pitched a first half shutout, but they could not hang on to seal the the deal as they fell to Troy 19-6 in Troy Friday night.

"I felt we played a great game in the first half," said Wellsboro head coach Chris Morral.

Early in the game, the Hornets (1-5) managed to convert on a fake punt on fourth down. That led to a Jesse Tom touchdown, which put Wellsboro up 6-0.

Tom ended the game with 126 yards on 17 carries.

On the ensuing kickoff, Pat Driebelbies squibbed a short kick over the head of the Troy returner and Matt Weaver made the recovery.

The Hornets, however, were not able to capitalize on the good field position and had to settle for a one touchdown lead at the half.

The first half may have belonged to the Hornets, but the Trojans (4-2) came out to play after the break.

The Troy offense was able to capitalize on two Hornet turnovers and managed to score 19 points in the second half. On the other side of the ball, the Trojan defense held Wellsboro scoreless for the second half of the game.

"The difference in the game was that they were able to convert turnovers and we weren't," Morral said.

The Hornets hope to turn their fortunes around over the next two weeks. The Friday is the Hornets' final away game. They will take on Montgomery, which only has one win on the season. Following that is a home game against the Cowanesque Valley Indians, who also have a record of 1-5.

Wellsboro's junior varsity team also dropped their game against undefeated Troy 21-8 on Monday. The Wellsboro JV Team is 4-2 on the season while Troy is 6-0.
