Wellsboro Defense Plays Big in Win
By: Ed Weaver / October 18, 2008
After two weeks of giving up over 40 points in each game, the Wellsboro Hornets held the Canton Warriors to six points and picked up their fifth win of the season by a final score of 18-6. The Hornet defense put pressure on Canton's Reese Holmes all afternoon, which allowed Jake Coolidge, Steve Mengee, and Cameron Jones to intercept the Canton signal caller.
Offensively the Hornets were led on the ground by Senior Fullback Pat Driebelbies and Coolidge. Both backs put up good numbers on the ground, while Jones went over the 1,000 yard mark passing for the season when he connected with Mengee on a long pass down the Wellsboro sideline. Mengee fumbled at the goal line, but Senior Receiver Garrett Stager trailed the play and eventually recovered the ball in the end zone for the touchdown.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 5-3 overall and deal Canton their first loss of the 2008 season. The Hornets will be in action next Friday night as they face off against East Juniata in their final non-league contest of the season.
