Hornets Suffer 35-7 Loss To Loyalsock

It took the Loyalsock Lancers just 17 seconds to put up the game's first points on the Wellsboro Hornets on Friday, September 11 as they cruised to a 35-7 win.

After returning the game's opening kickoff to the Wellsboro 47, Loyalsock's Ivan Baker ripped off a 47-yard touchdown run to put the Lancers up 7-0. Loyalsock struck two more times in the first quarter, once on a 22-yard pass from Dyson Dupont to Carter Brown, and the second on a two-yard run by Cayden Sones. After the game's first 12 minutes, Loyalsock held a 20-0 lead.

Baker struck pay dirt for the second time in the game on a 21-yard run with 2:04 remaining in the first half to increase the Lancers' lead to 27-0. Then later in the third, with 2:48 remaining, Matthew Rickard scored from a yard out to push the lead to 35-0 following a two-point pass from Dupont to Brown, enacting the mercy rule.

The Hornets got on the scoreboard late in the game. After a 15-yard run by junior Reed Richardson, junior Griffin Morral called his own number, broke through the Lancer defense, and raced down the sideline for a 60-yard score. Sophomore Maddon Mascho connected on the extra point, bringing the score to 35-7 with 3:37 left in the game.

Loyalsock accumulated 364 yards of total offense while they held Wellsboro to 175 yards. Dupont was 10-for-15 through the air for 105 yards and rushed for another 31 yards. Baker led all rushers with 138 yards on 12 carries and Brown caught 5 passes for 57 yards.

Morral completed 5-of-14 passes for 54 yards and rushed 13 times for 84 yards. Richardson carried the ball 7 times for 39 yards and senior Max Mascho posted 13 yards on 4 attempts. He also caught one pass for 10 yards. Sophomore Christian Main caught two passes for 31 yards, senior Ethan Keane had one catch for 11 yards, and junior Kody Enck caught a screen pass for 2 yards.

Enck led Wellsboro's defense with 10 tackles. Richardson added 8 stops and Mascho had an interception.

The Hornets (1-2, 1-0 NTL Large School Division) are back in action next Saturday afternoon at Canton.
